Sam Hughes Inn
WHO is SAM HUGHES? SAM HUGHES INN takes its name from the "reputed" first person to ever visit Arizona for health reasons. The real Sam Hughes settled here in the 1850's, became an alderman and early mover and shaker of the city of Tucson. (His brother was Governor of the "then" territory of Arizona.) He married and raised 15 children but there is no truth to the rumor that this feat alone was the reason for designating the surrounding neighborhood as an historic district bearing his name.
LOCATION, LOCATION: The inn is located in a residential neighborhood, which is a treasure trove of early southwest architectural styles. As a contributing member of the Sam Hughes Historic District, the inn is a beautifully accurate example of early 1930's California Spanish design with key expansions added in the 1950's. Tall pines, eucalyptus, mesquite and palm trees, plus many varieties of native and non-native vegetation including cactus and oleander in abundance surround it. Situated on a city "double-wide" lot, Sam Hughes features a large walled rear yard with a sunken garden containing many species of seasonal flowers, centered by a bubbling fountain. A patio and the large adjacent area offer enough seating to satisfy the shade or sun lover. The house and the property are representative of "early" Tucson and offer rest and retreat from the cares of the day.
INSIDE: The house features four bedrooms, each with private bath. Each bedroom is themed to some aspect of early life in the area. American Indian, Mexican, Cowboy Western and Santa Fe, NM details are among the decorating schemes. The main house has all original wood or tile and terrazzo floors. Public rooms include the entrance (formerly the living room, with fireplace and cove ceiling), an Arizona/game room facing the garden, dining room, kitchen and a large Great Room with 15 foot stone fireplace and floor to ceiling library. Art Deco designs and antique furnishings are scattered throughout the house.
BREAKFAST: The typical full Bed & Breakfast morning meal consists (always) of a delicious, usually vegetarian, main course featuring "the egg" as a primary ingredient. (Substitutes can be easily arranged for people on restricted diets.) Accompanying the main event are fresh baked rolls or coffee cake, seasonal fruit dishes, orange juice and meat on the side for those who want it. Coffee and tea, decaf or regular, complete the meal. Special requests honored whenever possible.
WHY STAY HERE WHEN YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE? Loving attention to detail, privacy, warm inviting breakfasts, the feeling that you are at home, and a congenial hostess, who incidentally, plays dynamite Scrabble, are reasons enough to visit Sam Hughes.
Other reasons to visit include: we're at the doorstep of the University of Arizona & 1 mile from the University Medical Center. It's a great walk-about, jog-through, neighborhood near Reid/Randolph Park (containing paved paths, golf course, pool & zoo), a fifteen minute drive from the Tucson airport, two blocks from the Phoenix Airport/AZ shuttle drop off location, five minutes from downtown Tucson, bus service from the next two neighboring streets (to shopping, restaurants and downtown) and a centrally located, easy drive to all the major visitor attractions in and around the Tucson area and the beautiful surrounding mountain ranges. We're also minutes from I-10, the main entry corridor to Nogales, Mexico (1 1/2 hours to the south), and Phoenix, AZ (2 hours to the northwest).
And finally: Enjoy the great Southwest experience without worrying about rattlesnakes, scorpions, giant hairy spiders, bobcats, mountain lions or bear. They don't much care for city life.
Historic, Handsome, Handy and Hospitable; that's Sam Hughes Inn.
